OBC PFC stage — key device selection

Engineering problem

The PFC front end runs directly from the AC grid through the vehicle inlet: it must reach the required efficiency and power factor, survive surge and mains transients, and keep EMI within limits without oversized filters.

Power stage

SiC MOSFET / IGBT

Why this device: The switching leg of the PFC; efficiency at light load and thermal behaviour at full load decide the charger's size.

How to choose: 650 V for single-phase, 1200 V for high-power three-phase; SiC gives efficiency and higher frequency, IGBT lowers BOM cost.

FAQ

Does SiC always pay off in the PFC stage?

Not always. It pays off where efficiency targets, size or high switching frequency dominate; at lower power with relaxed targets, a super-junction MOSFET bridge can be the better value.
